Should Maya Jane Coles Given Up That Sample To Nicki Minaj?

Those not present in the pop world would have most likely missed hearing Nicki Minaj’s new one “Truffle Butter” featuring Future Music Festival Headliner Drake and Lil Wayne, no biggie right?

Well turns out British producer Maya Jane Coles actually coughed up the sample for it from her 2010 hit “What They Say” which was a whole lot better in original form.

Now critics have come out on both sides of the argument as to whether MJC should have put her, ahh artistic integrity into question forcing her to make an official statement of her own;

It’s interesting to see all of the hateful comments about the Nicki Minaj track. As a producer that only makes music that I love, for me, it’s only an honor to have people from completely different scenes wanting to sample one of my productions. I NEVER compromise my own music. If I didn’t like it, why would I bother making it. If someone else likes what I have done and wants to sample it and use it in their own style then for me that is a huge compliment. just saying. PLUS also, why do people keep talking about money?? Record sales don’t make money anymore!!! This has nothing to do with money, I came from a hip hop background, that’s what got me into music in the first place. It’s so weird to have to explain myself about something I’ve always loved doing.

Without reading into it too much, she says money wasn’t the key here as “record sales don’t make money anymore” rather loves Hop Hop so much to give it up to possibly two of the worst in the scene?

Irregardless of the age, it still connects the artists moving forward and opens the doors to similar collaborations while scrapping the originals stamp (what are kids going to remember first?).

We’re still scratching our heads but hey, you can do what you want these days and with pops insatiable lust for dance music right now there’s surely something in it for Maya to have done it. Maybe we should be pointing the finger at the label or management instead?
