DEEBS talks new music, the industry and big booties

Canadian producer DEEBS has released the first single to his upcoming EP, titled ‘At Last’.

The Toronto local has been one of the city’s most promising yet underlying producers since he stepped into the scene with his impressive solo production work in 2012, and a collection of head-turning remixes from a broad range of artists.

We spoke briefly with DEEBS (Will Diebel), on the topic of his new EP, titled ‘Songs4UByMe’, and the musical community of Toronto and Canada as a whole.

___

How long has this EP been in the works for? Have you enjoyed the process of putting it together?

The EP has been in the works for several months.  Some of the production might even reach back to really late 2013 sessions.  The production phases were kind of disjointed and but I ended up choosing the tracks I thought worked well together.  It was really enjoyable to work on, most of this stuff was made in my spare time so I was literally doing it for fun.

Musically, what were the major influences for how your EP has panned out?

Hard to pin down my influences exactly.  I’ve been listening to all kinds of things.  Been into the productions that Shlohmo, Evian Christ & Ryan Hemsworth have been releasing for a while.  Love Suicideyear’s new album & Photay’s new release on Astro Nautico – they’re always on point.  Been obsessed with LDR’s album for a while, Makonnen’s EP and PC Music have been killing it as well.  I’d like to think all this stuff influences my own music in some way.

There are a lot of really promising artists coming out of Canada, and Toronto in particular. What is the scene like their? Are all the producers really tight?

Yeah there have been some really great new artists repping the 6ix. Obviously OVO’s influence here is strong, pretty much everything they touch has been great in my opinion.  Party Next Door in particular has been one of my favs to break out of Toronto recently.  He actually claims to be from Mississauga which is kind of funny to me because that’s where I’m living now and it’s the most boring place on earth, but the guy is an amazing talent.  When it comes to producers in the city there are too many talented people to name. Particularly feeling what Harrison and OBESON have been doing; Meesha and Exeter are homies that have been quietly putting out some great music.  Also, I wouldn’t sleep on the west coast; Ekali and Rook Milo from Vancouver are making cool sounds.

Do you have any big plans in stall for the near future? Or are you content with how well things are going for now?

I’d like to take things to the next level. You could say I’m ready to take the nestea plunge into the producer game.  I’ve already got the foundations for the next EP and have a live set that I’ve been working on so I’m excited to see where that can go.  I’m basically prepared to do anything that gets me closer to including aged cheddar on my rider. (REAL TALK)

Finally, as an up-and-coming producer in a very popular music community; what do you think it takes to stand out from the crowd ?

big booties, Head-mouse things, pretending to be an animal etc.  I think I’m fucked.
