Dance Music Facts: Today I Learned!

Following on from the success of our first dance music facts article written almost two years ago(!!), we’ve dug into the dance music archives and created part two of our series that delves into the lesser known side of well international producers. Some range from the seemingly obvious to completely obscure. How many did you already know?

Fact One – Giorgio Moroder (Daft Punk Collaborator)
Today I learned…Daft Punk’s right hand man Giorgio Moroder, who worked with them on their ‘Random Access Memories’ album won the first ever Best Dance Recording Grammy way back 16 years ago in 1998! He currently and unusually shares this accolade with Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Madonna. How does that even make sense? Skrillex and Zedd have since taken over the title from 2012 to now.

Fact Two – Calvin Harris
Today I learned… In 2005, when you were doing your local groceries in Scotland, you could have had your food bagged by none other than Calvin Harris. The producer who is now ranked in the Top 10 Richest Musicians Under 30 in the UK and Ireland, can be seen here sporting some kind of grown out bowl cut serving your local community. Oh how times have changed for this man!

Fact Three – Deadmau5
Today I learned… It ‘aint easy being cheesy! Deadmau5 probably has a few regrets in his lifetime but none more cringe worthy than an appearance on a 2010 episode of Gossip Girl (ex oh ex oh) at a super lame fash show. I bet you this will make you realise it’s been a long time since you listened to his single ‘Hi Friend’.

Fact Four – Scott Storch
Today I learned… Hip hop producer Scott Storch who helped produce the riffs for the song “Still D.R.E.” as well as commercial hits including Fat Joe’s “Lean Back” is now producing as he proclaims proudly “EDM”. He can be seen on his Instagram being a bit of a noob and also hanging out with the likes of R3hab, David Guetta, Eliza Doolittle and others.

Fact Five – Tiesto
Today I learned… Everyones favourite brill creamed up dutch dynamo Tiesto was the first ever DJ to perform at an opening ceremony of an Olympics. More specifically the dutchman performed the mix for Greece’s Athens summer Olympics in 2004! The mix really starts at the two minute part of this video. Really quite dramatic music for the athletes haha.
