Dillon Francis

Following the success of latest hit ‘Without You’ ft. T.E.E.D and kicking a whole lotta tushie on tours (Holy Ship!!! – woah!), Dilly Francis has been on a perpetual spiel of musical troublemaking – and we’ve been loving it.

I’d been casually stalking Dillon around the Big Day Out tour 2014, and was lucky enough to catch a cheeky phone call during day three in Adelaide. It was stinking hot and I’d been locked out of the media tent, so I had my chat to the new dance legend whilst sitting in-between two demountables and enjoying a few tinnies.

DF: Hey!

IC: Hey! I thought I would start off with making you a tiny little bit of a confession.

DF: Yeah…

IC: So at Melbourne big day out last week I was backstage;

DF: Uh-huh…

IC: …and you were there. And I tried to rub my butt cheek against yours.

DF: (laughs) And did you make it happen?

IC: I was seriously a foot away! I was actually so close!

DF: Next time for sure!

IC: Today, I’m coming for you today.

DF: Alrght, well we’ll shake our butts. I’m ready.

IC: So how’s the Big Day Out tour been going for you?

DF: It’s been awesome! It’s really good. It’s getting better and better every time I come to Australia.

IC: Have you been having some cheeky backstage times with the other acts?

DF: Yeah with Flume and Major Lazer and Mac Miller. Mainly we’re the people that go to Major Lazer and fuck around. And Flosstradamus, of course.

IC: Speaking of whom, you guys went a bit nuts on Holy Ship, how did that partnership come about?

DF: I’ve known the Flosstradamus guys since the beginning of me making music, they were actually the first people that I ever did a remix for. So I’ve known Kurt for a long time, we met in LA and we always stay in touch – I kept sending them my music – so when they did the whole Flosstradamus 2.0 thing they hit me back up and we went on tour together and became even better friends. We’ve done about three tours now.

IC: Well you guys really pulled it out for Holy Ship. Your show looked like it was potentially the most hectic – did you seen any crazy stuff go down in the crowd from that prime position?

DF: I don’t look to the crowd that much. I mean I do but I don’t look for anything, because I don’t really wanna see anything, I just kind of look into the beyond.

IC: That’s so existential of you, and on that, dead or a live, who’s your dream collaboration?

DF: Hmmm… Let me see. He’s alive still, it would be Washed Out. I just really like his stuff a lot, all of it’s like, super happy summer music, and I love summer time. Anything that’s just super happy music I wanna work with.

IC: That’s surprising because your biggest track recently is ‘Without You’ and has been referred to as ‘sensitive EDM’, how do you feel about that title?

DF: (laughs) I think it’s just because of the vocals on it, if you listen to the instrumental on it, it’s super happy. But people cry when they listen to it.

IC: I cry for sure. It was a bit of a change up from the moombahton vibe we’d come to expect from you?

DF: Yeah well I just do everything, I don’t try to stay in one genre. I don’t want people to expect anything from me, I want them think ‘ok, well the next thing could be crazy’ – or whatever.

IC: So do you have any hints for what the next music trend for you might be?

DF: Well the next single that I have coming out is with DJ Snake and it sounds like Arabian music, definitely Arabian booty bounce music.

IC: We know you have a history in visual arts and you ‘Without You’ video was aesthetically out-there. How much do you find you want to get creative with your music visually as you do behind the decks?

DF: I contribute to it a little bit but not a lot. Like with the ‘Bootleg Fireworks’ video I remember calling my manager and saying ‘my head, on different peoples bodies, jumping around, pogoing’ – take it away. For ‘Without You’ I didn’t really know where to go with it – I always like to go in a bit of a jokey direction so for that one I was like, ‘you take it’ because I wanted it to be serious. So my manager took it and set it out to a bunch of directors. I don’t like to contribute that much to music video stuff, because that’s not my forte.

IC: And do you feel awkward being in them?

DF: (laughs) Nah, I love it!

IC: Your website is full of personal antics for sale, if we had a cheeky $1,o00,000 we would totally ship you off to the army. What is the craziest thing you would put up there to sell yourself to?

DF: Well we’re just about to put a new one up, which is I’ll get fake tits for $2 million.

IC: What size, is it at the discretion of the purchaser?

DF: Yeah for sure.

IC: Someone’s going to make you get big ass titties and then you’re going to be stuck with them.

DF: Well I can get them and then take them out!

IC: You never know, maybe you’ll like them.

DF: I’ll get em’, I’ll take a picture and then I’ll get them taken off.

IC: You’ll start shaking them and then you won’t be able to get enough.

DF: Yeah. Probably!

And yep, later in the day I did get that booty bump with Dillon! Bumpalicous! (Excuse one hella creepy white gurl face!)
