Rolling Stone Magazine on DJ’s: “Criminals With a License To Shoot Shit Into Our Ear Drums””

Rolling Stone Italy have just celebrated their 10th anniversary, commissioning an ad that is guarenteed to get some blood boiling with what appears like a dig at the EDM takeover.

The ad features a combination of drug-related images, flashing neon lights and scantily-clad females, a clear-cut indication of their idea of the scene. However, it is hard to believe this can be related to dance music as a whole, with the voiceover forecasting ‘real music’ making a comeback with a “return to guitar, bass and drums”… Last time I checked a lot of GREAT dance music ticks all three of those boxes – and more.

If this is directed at dance music in general, then what a risky endeavour this has become. Modern day producers are sound engineers, who have an unlimited library of sounds and possibilities to choose from and in turn an unlimited scope for creativity. This freedom is not so much of a blessing as it is a barrier, as with so much opportunity for choice, one can find it extremely difficult to find any direction.

All in all, the clip is quite a humorous watch. If anything the idea behind it can be linked to what we learnt from Beatport CEO Mathew Adell, how it is unfortunate that with technological advances there is a lot more “shitty” music out there, but with that there is a lot of great music, you just gotta dig for it.

It is safe to say that Dance Music as a whole is very safe and will be sticking around for many years to come. Evidenced by the survival of disco following the worlds largest anti-disco riot back in 1979 which involved more than 50 000 cheering on the detonation of an LP mountain – it’s gonna take a lot more than that for dance to die.

With out further ado, we present to you ‘EDM from a old Rocker’s perspective’
