Maelstrom – USSR EP

Sound Pellegrino hit back with another doozy in the form of French producer Maelstrom and his house infused, Miami bass laden, exotic techno record USSR. Neither hailing from nor ever visited (I assume) the Soviet Union, Maelstrom finds the menace inside, channelling the historic, hideous regime and delivers the title track with merciless relent. The remixes from South African starlet Aero Manyelo and dark electronic pop wizard The Hacker are the pick of the bunch.

Continuing what is a rather large release, the originally titled ‘House Music’ backs up from the darker sounding ‘USSR’ with it’s uplifting, four-to-the-floor vibe and seminal bass approach. Not quite convinced on any of the three remixes myself, I don’t think the previews do them complete justice.

My favourite of the originals though, is easily ‘Pool Chicks’, sounding just as the title suggests. One. Massive. Party. With chicks! By the pool! Feel the out of this world vibe as the tight hats snap and looped recoil become a permanent reoccurrence in your ear drum.

February 20th is the official drop date, so try and let the previews satisfy until then.
