Wordlife Strike Out At “Sub Par Flume Clones”

In the lead up to this weekend’s Not Another Boat Party and A1 Bassline (Dirtybird) After Party, we had a chat with some of the acts jumping on the decks (Basenji interview here). Wordlife were kind enough to share their thoughts on a range of hot topics, including their exciting future collaborations and releases (along with their dream collaborations) and the future direction of dance music in Australia. Notably, the lads had some choice words for where they’d like to see young Aussie producers and dance music head –

“Motorik is really growing the techno scene, which is good to see in a market flooded with vanilla deep house and sub par Flume clones. We’d really like to see more producers making original music that transcends existing genres and brings something new to the table. There’s definitely not enough of that in Australia at the moment.”

We appreciate the honest response from the lads. Whilst it’s fantastic to celebrate the skills of some of Australia’s up and coming crop of producers – in particular Flume and the path that he has carved for many young musicians – the saturation of that familiar sounds within the Aussie market is becoming a little over cooked. We agree that it’s time for producers to become a little more daring and push the boundaries, rather than rest on a formula already tried, tested and exhausted.

Stories like Flume’s provide encouragement for producers to try something a little different and establish their own sound and props to Wordlife for being one of the first Aussie acts to publicly acknowledge that.
