Ever wondered if those doobies, pingers and bags that the feds confiscate from munters get used later in police ‘personal’ times (‘free stash lad!’)? Well the argument has finally been given some gravitas at Stadium Nightclub in Jakarta – which has been forced to close this weekend after a copper OD’d on the premises.

Compared to Berlin’s infamous Berghain, Stadium has been going strong since 1998, pulling a string of famous producers – and subsequent drug use and sex trading (both are apparently available via the wait staff – if that’s not convenient then I don’t know what is). Previous headliners of the 24-hour party palace include Dennis Ferrer, Âme (who incidentally has just been announced at this year’s Strawberry Fields fest), Danny Howells and Green Velvet amongst many other DJ elite.

But all good thing’s must come to an end, and it seems that time is nigh for Stadium. Deputy Governor “Ahok” Purnana announced an ordered the nightclub’s closure on Sunday to Jakarta’s Tourism Agency, whom have since ensured the party-spot’s conclusion. “This incident cannot be tolerated”, he told a Jakarta press conference. The cop in question was a 22-year-old officer – referred to by the media only as JVG.

But what is it exactly that can’t be tolerated? The crazy nightclub and party lifestyles – or the misuse of police privilege and poor conduct? Kinda reminds us of NSW Premier Barry O’Farrel’s wine woes – funny how the man who brought in Australia’s toughest alcohol reforms would be brought down by the bottle, Indonesian police have remarked as being equally as tough with drugs. When it comes to a misuse of state power the old saying should be reversed – don’t hate the game, hate the player.
