Wave Racer – Rock U Tonite

Oh sweet vocoder, you melt like honeycomb in my mouth. You taste even better when you’re resting on a bed of dense synthcake. Drizzle some melodic treacle over the top and my friend, you have the perfect after-dinner treat. I’m going to give the dessert metaphor a rest before my keyboard short circuits from excess amounts of drool, but my enthusiasm rings true in literal terms too – Wave Racer’s ‘Rock U Tonite’ is bloody excellent.

The title of this track is very similar to the title of " target="_blank">a Spinal Tap song, and that’s kinda perfect. ‘Rock U Tonite’ is shameless fun that doesn’t mind borrowing from other artists in an obvious way. It’s easy to hear the influence of producers such as Rustie, Hudson Mohawke and Cashmere Cat. However Wave Racer doesn’t bastardise the sound, and unlike Spinal Tap, he isn’t making fun of his predecessors. He simply takes all the best bits, adds a squirt of his own flavour, and pumps out a jam that’ll put a skip in your step and a grin on your face. While it’s not jaw-droppingly original, it’s still exciting.

Wave Racer adds to the list of talented producers emerging from Sydney. He’s not coming completely out of the blue though. As part of production duo Pablo J & The Lobsterettes, he’s made plenty of delicious disco house, so it’s pretty clear that this track wasn’t a fluke. If Wave Racer is willing to take some risks with this new project, it could pick up serious momentum and we might have something really special on our hands.

Now you go enjoy the tune while I study the image above and try to work out if that semi-circle below Wave Racer’s nose is his chin or his mouth.
