WATCH (at your own risk): Snoop Lion – “La La La”

Vice is promoting Snoop Lion’s new video for his Major Lazer produced track “La La La,” calling it “mindblowingly amazing.” Well, you can be the judge of that, but all I know is, somebody’s mind is definitely blown. Hard. In a good way? The best reader comment from Vice’s post had to be this one: “jesus christ, snoop has done smoked himself retarded.” Then again, maybe there’s more to Snoop than we ever expected…

Directed by Eli Roth, also known for cinematic classics like Cabin Fever, Hostel and Hostel II, the video consists of several key elements: animated inebriated fruit, kids in costumes, babes in costumes, fun cartoon graphics with Rasta colors, a pug, a coffin, lots of mysterious smoke, a lion-themed throne and sceptre, a robot, neon body paint and black lighting. What’s not to like? Amazingly mindblowing, mindblowingly amazing? You bet.

Snoop Lion’s upcoming Reincarnated will be his 12th studio album, birthed in Jamaica with Diplo as his executive producer. Jokes aside about the video, it’s impressive to see this legendary 40 year old rapper taking on a fresh persona, and letting it redefine his musical style.

Reincarnated is free of the expletives and profanity typical of hip hop lyrics, and he explained to Rolling Stone“It’s not that I don’t want to do it anymore; I just didn’t want to do it on this particular record. That was the language that hip-hop communicates, but reggae music can articulate with different language, which is the language of love, struggle and peace at the same time.” This transformation (from dog to…cat?) is refreshing and playful, and definitely drives the youthful spirit of the video. In the words of Snoop Lion: “Respect, every time.”

The documentary Reincarnation that premiered at the Toronto Film Festival explores the stages of Snoop’s life and how his path has led him to this reawakening. Check out the trailer.
