Power Station: A New Clubbing Destination

A new club fraternity has appeared in the bustling city of Melbourne that looks to re-calibrate the minds and excite the real dance heads with its focus on forward-thinking music and . It’s not about short dresses (although welcome) and snapping the most selfies ever (OMG!), instead ‘Power Station’ is about the “best music, best party, best magic” and of course… mingers.

Taking time out from building, running and promoting the most badass club and best thing since the discovery of amyl, we chatted with the three brains behind Power Station – Michael Delaney and Kris & Dan Baha about all kinds of things go, be it their respective histories in the industry, the nostalgia behind the ‘Power Station’, the magic, that one time Michael smoked snow cones with Mick Jagger and of course, once again, mingers (we’ll start to get it shortly).

SR: What is your collective background in creating clubs and bars?
Michael – I started and ran Honkytonks, Third Class, Sorry Grandma!, Superdisco, Survivor! and Poof Doof and a few pubs in Sydney.
Kris – DJ booker/ programmer for People, After Dark Social Club , Survivor and now Power Station.
Dan – I started and created Any Excuse running one off parties with international artist, moved on to running After Dark Social Club, followed by becoming one of the creators and head promoter of Survivor with my brother (Kris) and Michael Delaney and now it is time to flick the switch with Power Station.

SR: You are currently putting the final touches together for the newly renovated Brown Alley. Tell us a bit more about the idea behind the re-design?
Michael -The redesign for us has been more about creating a ‘club’ in a venue so famous for great dance party ‘events’. We have ramped up the freaky lights and production in the venue for all to share as well as adding in some serious elements for the mingers.

SR: Where did the name ‘Power Station’ derive from?
Michael – We had a few choice names to pick from but POWER STATION was something we all freaked out about. Kraftwerk, in German, means power station and they as a band pretty much were the start of this electronic culture we are now a part of. We like the history. The parties we create have always been about energy, magic, the power of the night time experience. Power Station ended up being the perfect name for what we are about to do.

SR: Clubbing is becoming a serious institution in Melbourne, was this one catalyst for the creation of Power Station?
Michael – Clubbing in Melbourne has been serious for MANY YEARS. It is one of the best clubbing cities on earth. The good thing about the scene in Melbourne is that the scene is big enough for good clubs, weird clubs, underground clubs, mainstream clubs etc. We needed no catalyst to make a new club – this is what we do… we would always want to be running the best club in the city : best music, best party, best magic.

SR: Is there a skew towards local Melbourne artists or Australia wide?
Kris – There are great artists Australia wide but Melbourne is where we reside so it will naturally have an outweighed skew.

SR: What sort of music can we expect to be played weekly at Power Station?
Kris – Something we have not favoured, most notably at Survivor! was trying to label the club to one sort of ‘genre’ or ‘sound’. So this policy will continue on. With any open minded DJ/ Willing crowd , great music gets played! This i can say, expect ENERGY, POWER & RELEASE.

SR: What do you think 2014 holds for dance and electronic music?
Dan – less Melbourne sound and more mingers dancing

SR: What has been a highlight of your careers?
Michael – smoking snow cones with mick jagger at honky-tonks in 2004
Kris – dj-ing at top shop
Dan – Survivor! Club of Legends… the vibe in the room each night was out of this world, you really had to be there…

Continuing a steady roll the lads just hosted the official Melbourne Dimensions launch party that tote Mike Callander, Kris Baha, The Tortoise, Emmanuel and Love Hotel District. This week it’ll be BARNT and Paranoid London on mixing duties, tickets here.
