Pleasurekraft

Rewind to the spring of 2010, and the year’s biggest smash hit, Pleasurekraft’s “Tarantula” was released. It quickly earned the support of the world’s biggest DJs and went on to win not only Top Tech House track at the Beatport awards in Miami in March 2011 – but took the coveted grand prize of Top Track of the Year (ALL Genres). Currently in transit to Australia, we got a chance to gain an insight into the dance music duet!

First job?

Working at a now renamed and then bankrupt music store called “Sam Goody”. Second job was also a music store but one with much more selection where I met a couple of people that helped shape my musical education. Its kind of like being a book addict and working in a library, surrounded by librarians who introduce you to the shit you really should be reading – the world is your oyster in that situation.

Hero?

This is so hard as I think the whole concept is a bit distorted. I can tell you some people who have made various impressions on me as a person and how I view the world, but really even such a list falls far short of all the people who have been tremendous influences in my life. So to shorten it a tad I will just stick with the living ones. These range from everything from artists to musicians to actors, to political figures/writers etc etc sorry for the randomness! – Maynard James Keenan (lead singer of Tool), Tom Waits, Tom Morello, Noam Chomsky, Van Hunt, A Tribe Called Quest, Timbaland, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Deftones, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Emir Kusturica, David Fincher, Daniel Lanois, James Frey, Chuck Palahniuk, Banksy and many many more but I bet most readers will have stopped and wondered how the hell Kanye + Lil Wayne made it into that list! Inspiration comes in many many different forms, and for me personally there is no one as original in their lyrics in hip hop as Lil Wayne – whether you love him or hate him, he registers some sort of emotion with nearly everyone, and that is all an artist can hope to do. Same with Kanye. Am I in love with his outside-of-the-studio antics? No. Do I think the media play a big role in making him appear a certain way? Of course. Is he a talented producer regardless of genre – without question.

Song closest to heart?

Impossible question to answer. I live breath and eat music, to have to choose 1 song from 1 genre would be an impossible task. I can tell you I have gone back to some old Deftones records I used to listen to a few years back, and they still sound as amazing as before.

Favourite DAW?

Logic 9

Memory of first gig you played at?

A lounge in Washington DC where the booth could not fit more than 1 person at a time, it faced a wall – literally – to see the microscopic dancefloor you would have to turn 135degrees to your left, and no booth monitor. The setup was probably from the Jurrassic era, but as a result it forced me to spin without the use of monitors, in my headphones. Now when I show up to gigs and the monitors in the booth are crap I don’t sweat it – its kind of nice actually – and your ears dont get fatigued nearly as fast.

Top 3 people to work with in the near future?

Green Velvet, Lil Wayne, I would love to add Maynard James Keenan of Tool or Chino Moreno of Deftones to that list but don’t know if either one would be possible – definately not Maynard tending to his grape vines in rural Arizona!

Last thing you do before you dj?

Even though I don’t believe there is such a thing as an “accident” and truly feel that everything happens for a reason, I am not very superstitious, and as a result don’t have any kind or pre-djing ritual. Probably just check to see if the opening dj is going into the red on the mixer as they are prone to do – louder is not always better!!

What have you got in store for Australia?

Lots of housey Tech House that is visceral and makes you want to actually dance, not just stand around holding your drink and bobbing your head like you are too cool for school!! It will get in your bones – or I will have failed!

What else are you good at?

Answering interview questions? haha I don’t know – I guess that question is better answered by those that know me.
