Tessela – Nancy’s Pantry EP [R&S Records]

Tessela‘s debut EP for R&S Records has just been released, and the ‘Nancy’s Pantry’ 3-tracker offers up a massive triple shot of technoid ruffige. The a-side and title track combines his signature breakbeat-cutting craft with rusted industrial textures, but keeps it rave-not-goth with energising bursts of chrome chords. Track 2 ‘Horizon’ harks back to proper ’91 styles with sliced-up breaks, percolating hi-hats, rough-hewn percussion and peakin’ rave lifts budged to futurist specs, while ‘Gateway’ cuts loose with bruising/bruised bass and brutalist breakbeat techno, with its uncomplicated arrangement set to rattle the hell through the club soundsystems.

The record aims to pack a similarly swinging punch to ‘Hackney Parrot’ that was released earlier this year on his own new Poly Kicks label, with stylistic nods to techno, jungle and early hardcore. With early support from Ben UFO (who just premiered his Essential Mix), Pariah, Surgeon, Pearson Sound and Paul Woodford, it’s certainly Tessela‘s most brutal offering yet.
