Kwick – Night Life (U-Tern & Cosmic Kids Edit)

The Nu Disco scene has been quiet lately–almost too quiet (but hell, we needed a break). Fortunately, some of Los Angeles’ finer purveyors of the funk–U-Tern (one half of Oliver) and the Cosmic Kids teamed up, put Kwick’s obscure boogie-burner “Night Life” into their shredder, and turned it into one helluva an edit. Not that it’s any surprise–U-Tern honed his chops in Vancouver as a radio DJ, working in countless edits into his sets that slowly gained him mainstream notice. As for the Cosmic Kids, when they’re not too busy playing all-Vinyl DJ Sets, they’re consistently delivering edits with an impeccable balance of past-time paradise and future funk.

Whether it’s U-Tern’s slight alteration of a Stevie Wonder classic (Do I Do) or the Cosmic Kids’ ethereal interpretation of Fleetwood Mac’s “Never Going Back,” these artists produce dank, funky ass edits on the reg. Their collaborative effort on “Night Life” is no exception to this rule, and the synth work at approximately the 4:30 mark will make your girlfriend’s panties hit her ankles. This edit right here, it’s simply that Lush fire–and a prime example of why the best producers in this genre have a very keen understanding of what came before them, and take the time and effort to keep its sound and integrity very much alive. While the Nu Disco sound has turned into some bizarre amalgamation of tropicalia, cowbells, and shitty pop music, guys like these are making sure it all goes back to where it belongs: the dance floor.

The Cosmic Kids recently performed at Dam-Funk’s Funkmosphere. The result was an all-vinyl, all-groovy set that caused lots of humping of the air:
