Keenly anticipated debut from Hamburg’s Helena Hauff, a no-nonsense three tracker for Werkdiscs and Ninja Tune embodying her penchant for raw, hip-jerking acid. If you primarily associate Hauff with electro – a core component of her beer-soaked DJ sets at the storied Golden Pudel, and the basis of her Obscure Object mixtape for BEB’s Krokodilo imprint earlier this year – then you might be surprised by ‘Actio Reactio’, a dizzying, 10-minute lo-fi box jam that calls to mind the gleeful Chicago-is-burning 303 abuse of Legowelt, Steve Summers, Kyle Hall, and even rougher, tape-crunched gear from the likes of Cloudface or PWOG.

But despite its organic, improvised feel, don’t be fooled: this is music arranged and engineered for maximum dancefloor impact, and its insistent, smacked-out kicks, whipcrack claps and impertinent cymbal crashes are irresistible – the right clubs will go nuts to this. ‘Break Force’ is a more concise, loose and hard-vamping house cut, and is probably the track here most likely to cut across different scenes, its shoulders-up, heads-down swagger packing some notable UK spirit. ‘Micro Manifesto’ does away with drums entirely in pursuit of the Cold War electronics sublime, coming over like a three-way between Ekoplekz, Karl O’Connor and DJ Overdose – proper IFM-grade tackle. What do you reckon?
