Bondax – Giving It All

For a while now, Bondax have been putting out cosy, r&b-tinged tunes with an unexpected twist – a sub bass-led groove that wraps its fingers gently around your hips and draws you in close. That groove is what makes Bondax so irresistible to me. Whether they slow it down into an intimate serenade (like their remix of Rhye) or knead it into a dense wall of summer (a la ‘Baby I Got That’) it gives them a special ingredient that’s influencing the next era of r&b.

‘Giving It All’ lacks that ingredient to a certain extent. The track often relies on the melody of the vocals rather than that Bondax groove. The groove is certainly there in the chorus, but even then it’s almost drowned out by the vocals being so high up in the mix. Their previous single, ‘Gold’, suffers from a similar condition (the Snakehips remix is ace though) so I hope this isn’t a permanent change in direction for the Lancaster duo.

With that being said, ‘Giving It All’ is still another necessary step in transforming the often cringe-worthy relationship that r&b has with electronic dance music. Bondax weren’t trying to make another ‘Baby I Got That’, or ‘Open (Bondax Remix)’. ‘Giving It All’ is great for what it is – a pure pop song. However if delivering great danceable r&b for a large audience means watering down the things that make Bondax great, it’s a bittersweet deal.
