We had a chance to catch up with Michael Woods, one of Vessel’s newest residents, after an evening of explosive energy during his first BASE resident party. The crème de la crème of San Francisco nightlife, Vessel’s underground dancefloor was on fire with the stellar sounds of this UK superstar, and after nearly four hours of non-stop face-melting, Michael was kind enough to take the time to chat with a few of his SF fans, reassuring us that this is sure to be a lasting bond.
One of the most charming, dynamic and down to earth artists in the industry, Michael Woods is a resident for other world-renowned venues including Ministry of Sound, Cream at Amnesia, and Mansion in Miami. And this was not the first time he’d touched down at Vessel – after his previous visit back in November 2011, Michael knew he had to return.
Michael is the perfect example of a performer who is able to uplevel a crowd’s energy to the max through his pure enthusiasm for just being there in front of them, playing his heart out. And when you hear what he can crank out on a Funktion One, it’s a shock to the system, like being part of a bass bubble about to burst. Generating the ultimate equilibrium of a “get what you give” mentality, he modestly admits, “I just put out what I get, so it’s all good.”
After recently relocating to LA, this UK playboy is becoming a full-blown California dreamer. SF and Vessel have a lot to look forward to with this fledgling partnership. There’s no doubt Michael had a blast during his launch party, and when he says he likes to get “up close and personal with the people” that is literally true. Near the end of his set that night, Michael jumped off the decks to rage with the crowd on the dance floor. It was an epic moment for everyone, and something that is rare and refreshing to witness.
With his focus on fan reactions as he enjoys his music alongside the crowd as much as possible, Michael hasn’t let his fame and success get the better of him one bit, and he remains grounded despite being part of an industry flooded with diva-Djs and Prima donna producers.
So until next time Michael, Vessel and the Funktion One will be ready and waiting for our next unforgettable evening together in Frisco.
