Popular uploading and sharing site Megaupload has been officially shut down by the FBI.

Along with the site shutdown several employees were incited and are facing charges (some in New Zealand).

The instance and timing of the shutdown seems to tie in closely with two current legislations in front of the US Senate, SOPA and PIPA – both of which aim to empower the Entertainment industries with unfounded access in closing sites thought to be promoting ‘piracy’ and sharing ‘copywrite material’.

In retaliation hacker group Anonymous took swift action by disabling sites for the DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music.
