Insiders: Kastle’s Guide to San Fran Restaurants

Crooning future-beat gun Kastle, has given us the 411 on his favourite local San Fran eats, making up episode two of our ‘Insiders‘ segment.

Apart from methodical and outside-of-the-box production, he, like the rest of us enjoys dinning on the finer/fun things in life and when it includes a freakin’ place called ‘Crab House’ we’re going to listen up.

So if you ever find yourself in the sunnyside of the states, listen, walk and eat your way to any of these joints!

Kastle is currently touring Australia with his last two shows in Perth and Melbourne this weekend, dates here.

GARCON

This is a great French restaurant located in the Mission District. Start with the mussels and dip the complimentary baguette into the delicious wine broth. They have a great cocktail list. My favorite being the Black & Basil which is a mixture of black pepper, basil, gin and vodka. The burger on a brioche bun is a cheap eat or you can always count on their coq au vin or special of the moment. Superb and friendly staff, tell them Barrett sent you!

MISSION BEACH

One of my favorite brunch spots in the Mission-Dolores area. French toast with poached pears, apples and mascarpone. Delicious pastries and the candied bacon is essential. A bit of a wait on the weekends (approx 45 minutes) but totally worth it. You can always grab a strong, local coffee to help your wait.

CRAB HOUSE

It may be located in a tourist trap area on Pier 39, but this has been my favorite place for dungeness crab in the city (save buying a crab from a fish market and boiling it yourself). Great for large parties. You can buy pounds upon pounds of deliciously fresh crab. The mussels are also great here. Great Manhattans too.

PAKWAN

This is a serious cheap eat in the Mission District. Proper Indian food. Treat yourself to the mango lassi. Make sure to check out Adobe Books next door for some second hand items.

CHEZ PANISSE

A great reason to head over the Bay Bridge and visit Berkeley. Owned by Alice Waters who pioneered the farm-to-table movement with an in-house garden for the freshest salads and veggies you’ve ever had in your life. When I ate here for the first time I was more intrigued by the green beans than my steak. I’d suggest making reservations a week in advance for this one
