For most of us youngsters, it’s impossible to imagine where the majority of music we listen to today would be if not for the huge strides and innovations made in technology over the past several decades. 30 years ago marked a turning point in music production when Arthur Baker, Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force recorded their iconic track “Planet Rock“, using the (at that time) brand new Roland TR808. Not only did the track itself make musical history, but it totally transformed the way music would be made from that point forward, establishing the 808 as a critical modern instrument and a defining force in hip hop and electronic dance music.
In 2013, You Know Ltd. and Arthur Baker will debut Planet Rock and Other Tales Of The 808, a documentary on the Roland TR-808 and it’s fundamental role in the world of modern music. Directed by Alex Dunn and written by Luke Bainbridge, the film will feature commentary from many artists and musicians, including Questlove, Diplo, ToddlaT, Brodinski, Fat Boy Slim, Paul Oakenfold, New Order, A-Trak, Felix Da Housecat, SoulClap, Skrillex, Richie Hawtin, Soulwax, and of course Arthur Baker himself.
