Breakbot

Breakbot is a beyond busy man with touring, remixing and having just released his first album, By Your Side. The humble and softly spoken Frenchman was able to take out some time from his mad busy schedule to have a (very giggly) chat with me about the album, hair maintenance tips AND you’re hearing it here first, the possibility of Breakbot on Broadway.

Congratulations on your first album! The artwork is amazing. I’ve read that you used to be an animator. Did you do the art yourself?

Thank you! Well I can make the animation myself but I didn’t do it myself, I paid people to do it. Ah yeah we wanted it to look like pieces of chocolate.

Have you eaten any Breakbot chocolate?

(Laughs)… Yeah I did, well the label made some chocolate and it was pretty good.

Was it weird eating yourself?

It was pretty weird. When I was eating it for the first time I didn’t eat my head, I ate the whole thing but the head.

You’ve been producing and remixing for a long time now – so why do you think it took you so long to release an album?

Um… Because I’m slow and probably a bit stupid (laughs). It took something like 2 years for this to work it’s way… yeah so I’m very slow.

You’re coming to Australia in January with a live show? What can we expect from that?

You can expect fun and to be amazed by how crazy it is. You know, I’m not going to tell you any secrets (laughs).

All your music is pretty romantic, what’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever done for a girl?

Well once I was, I think I was in Italy. I just like rented the most amazing car ever and then took her to the nicest restaurant and there was just the two of us in there and they were playng the cello. That was pretty romantic.

If you had to choose between giving up your long hair or chocolate forever which would you choose?

I think it’d have to be the long hair.

What artists are you currently listening to?

I’m listening to a lot of hip hop. Listening to Frank Ocean, stuff like that.

Both Irfane and Ruckazoid do the vocals on a lot of your tracks. How did you first get in touch with them?

Well Irfane did a track with Krazy Baldhead on Ed Banger Records a few years agos called Sweet Night and I thought it would be interesting to get his vocals and he said yes and we became friends. Ruckazoid, I met him in LA at a friends house and he played me his tracks. I listened to his voice and I thought it would be fun to work with him so that’s what I did.

If you could collaborate with anyone, living or dead who would it be?

Living or dead? Well you can’t collaborate with dead people (laughs), so let’s talk about living people. I would love to make a track for Beyonce, it would have to be Beyonce.

Have you ever found anything interesting in your beard?

(Laughs) good question. Well once I found a ladybug in there…

Who’s the craziest fan that you’ve ever met?

I think it would have to be the person I had on the phone just before you. Her name was Hazel and she was from Sydney, do you know her? I guess you don’t but she was pretty crazy (laughs).

My hair is in pretty shit condition right now. Do you have any tips considering your hair always looks so healthy and luscious?

(Laughs) You know swim in the ocean, get some fresh air and you know, your hair is going to look amazing.

2012 looks like it’s going to be a pretty good year for you – you’ve released an album, have got a live show and are touring. Are there any plans to expand the Breakbot brand? A movie? A Broadway musical?

(Laughs) I would love to do a musical actually. It’s something my friends have spoken about before…It’d be funny we could call it ‘Breakshow’ or something. I’d play myself because I’m a great actor.

Can’t wait to see you in Australia Thibaut! Thanks for your time.

Yeah I’ll be there in January, see you then!
