Beatport And The Spawn Of That “Empty Big Room” Sound

“Tune Alert!”. Ivan Gough & Jebu have dropped a fresh track on Beatport. How would one describe it? “Empty big room sound with intricate percussion patterns”? Maybe. Its certainly a genre we’re not familiar with. Well, conjecture is circulating that Beatport has unfairly taken a jab at the producers with their description of the track entitled “Kukatu”. The description reads as follows.

“Tune alert! ‘Kukatu’ is the brand new outing by Ivan Gough & Jebu on Size. We just love that empty big room sound featuring a huge kick and intricate percussion patterns. The main theme sets the right mood for the climax, but when it drops you better brace yourself, cause ‘Kukatu’ hits hard!”

It could easily be argued that the track is a bit of an unimaginative dud with messy percussion and an anti-climatic drop, but that’s just my personal opinion. To be fair, it might work in a festival environ, but not in the lounge room, which might very well the intention of those exponents of “empty big room sound”. You might remember an amusing little mix we posted reflecting the failures of Beatport’s Top 100 we posted, and let’s just say “Kukatu” could slot right in.

Discussion on Reddit argues for and against the description, namely that it is not Beatport’s obligation to accurately represent the music being marketed, just to sell it! Conversely, one user indicates that it is the labels who write such descriptions and the not the host.

Either way, this track will probably be a chart topper, as it mirrors the conventions of every other “tune” that Beatport users devour.
