The Aston Shuffle are the kind of guys that sit in the studio working on real music and aren’t shy of a bit of hard work and especially not the type to showboat around the studios or hit up the socials every minute of everyday talking about frivolous bits and pieces ie an inspiring day ala Steve Angello.
They, instead have been chipping away at their latest full-length ‘Photographs’ for almost two years crafting and perfecting what is simply put, an album for the real electronic music fans that had already been teased in the form of buzzing singles “No Place Like Home” and an earlier cut “Tear It Down” – nice!
So it seemed only apt to get some priceless photographs of the pair about their new album… photographs and generally talk shop be it bumping around the iTunes chart with Skrillex, featuring on hilarious site Brown Cardigan and the always alluring move to the US.
SR: Album is out today, how you feeling?
AS: Relieved, tired, happy, nervous, um anxious, surreal (Vance: big word ha). Reflecting on the fact it’s been two years!
SR: Noticed the album popped up at in the charts, just tucked in behind Skrillex. How does that feel?
AS: It’s actually been hovering around #2 and #3. Feels good, hopefully we can take Skrilly out, he’s got a lot of love over here but we’ll give it our best shot (scrambed eggs arrive). Nice to know people are feeling it and it’s resonating! Hopefully they dig the rest of it! This one feels more connected and a full body of work. It’s about how it was recorded and one of the things we keep talking about is where it was recorded in Ulladulah and London. FUCK SKRILLY… He’s awesome!
SR: Your album, as far as we know didn’t leak. Do you think this changed the run-up to the official release?
AS: Um, hadn’t anticipated or thought about the possibility of it leaking to be honest. Maybe there’s no gooses at EMI or something (haha), they are running a tight ship. It depends on the artist in terms of their own attitudes of how tight they want to keep things but depends on the fan base as well. Some albums get released after a leak and still kills it. As a music lover if an album drops i’ll defn get it! We’re split. It is what it is. (Mikah: Do I have egg on my face?)
SR: What is your favourite track on the album? What face did you make when you finished it?
AS: Collectively we’re so proud of “Tear It Down” because the chords, we sat on those chords for over a year and we knew there was something so beautiful in them. We waited so long and tested out so many top lines for it but stuck with it because we knew we had something there.
SR: You made it onto Brown Cardigan for a snap from your album launch, What does this signal?
AS: We finally made it! Who needs a gold record when you’re on Brown Cardigan. Think it’s from our mirrorball girl from our album launch personally. It was really cool to get on there.
SR: Australian dance music seems to be buzzing right now, any particular producers you want to work with and your faces you’d make if/when it happened?
AS: (precursor)It’s crazy, I think Australia is finally seen as an equal. When we first started putting out records I guess it was common knowledge you needed an international remixer on the package for overseas to even have a look, it was a pack mentality but you needed an international to flip it out there. We haven’t even answered the other question sorry haha you guys not doing anything for the next 2 hours yeah? The internets great! Jagwa Mar is amazing but also Touch Sensitive because he is a lord! Also KIM from The Presets, a must.
SR: We get the feeling you had some stern words with ‘Melbourne Shuffle’ to change its name to ‘Melbourne Bounce’ to avoid any Aston Consequences. Is this true? What scary faces/poses did you have to use?
AS: Ahhh no haha that being said everyones asks us do you have a dance move? *taking photo, Mikah “You wot m8!”
SR: You’ve been dabbling with a move to the US due to ‘EDMs’ massive pull and audience. Why haven’t you made the jump just yet?
AS: We did like three tours last year and we defiantly have things cooking over there. Its a bit hard having a wife and a child but if its gets to a point where theres enough for us to do over there we’ll make the move. If we were young bucks we’d probably get on our backpack and already be there. It took us a long time to even get out of Canberra haha can’t be too blase about it though. Amazing to see aussies in LA though!
A HUGE thanks to The Aston Shuffle for taking some time out to chat to us, their album ‘Photographs’ is out now through EMI – give it a stream on xBox Music now.
