Well shit, Sydney venue The Basement is closing down…

The Basement is reportedly closing down, with plans for a new office building taking its place – which is definitely what we need more of…

According to Sydney musician Eric Fortaleza, the popular venue is set to become office buildings for AMP Australia. He said “It’s been an amazing two years. Amazing staff and an amazing venue that really knew how to take care of musicians.”

He added that “Venues close. Laws pass. But musicians will always find ways to share, perform, play and do what they love. See you all tomorrow night and let’s keep pushing our music and the Sydney Music Scene together!”

In response to this, a spokesperson from AMP Australia has issued a response, saying “AMP Capital has enjoyed a great relationship with The Basement for more than 10 years and has been strong supporters of the venue, their artists, patrons and live music in Sydney. “

“Like our partners at The Basement, we are equally disappointed the partnership and venue won’t continue after a decade of working together. We have worked with the management of The Basement for more than six months to ensure an appropriate transition could take place and have amicably agreed to end the lease. While it’s too soon to say whether another music operator, bar or restaurant will move in, there is absolutely no intention to convert The Basement into office space.”

There are still gigs booked at The Basement as far ahead as September. There is no word as of yet as to whether these events will be going ahead or if they will be cancelled.

If you want to get along to The Basement before it closes it’s doors for the last time, The Monday Jam will be having its final instalment tonight. Head to the Facebook page for more.
