5 electronic artists popping off on Unearthed right now

Triple j Unearthed has been the foster home for your local go-getting artists for over a decade at this point, and this community is still thriving with creativity blossoming from all states of this talented nation. It’s a DIY zone in there, with no special qualifications required to chuck some of your own tunes on the platform. You play by your own rules and hopefully the audience for you will find your music.

We’ve been digging through the haystack of electronic artists to find the special people to keep an eye on. With such creative freedom being allowed (and encouraged), we want to spotlight some of those artists who are really using this opportunity to create something unique and special. It’s artists like these that justify why we get excited about finding new artists to spotlight and command you to immediately check out. You don’t want to miss these people.

Lonelyspeck

This Adelaide singer/producer is onto something huge with their dreamy experimental-tinged electro-pop. They bring a very sensitive voice with down-tempo production that feels like a daze. You’ll catch influences of Fka Twigs, Wild Nothing and some of that late Justin Bieber, but there’s nothing about this producer’s music that doesn’t feel uniquely their own. Definitely don’t let this slip by you if you like some beautiful, pop-centric electronic vibes.

Ok Sure

This some of that hypnotic dance music we’re head over heels for. Ok Sure loads her pumping tech-house tracks with colourful textures and rhythmic grooves dig themselves right into your brain. Her approach to tech-house is quite maximal, there’s a lot of sounds coming at you from different directions, but still she shows off some strong fundamentals of what makes for great dance music. Put this on when you feel dazed and confused, and you’ll be sweet.

Akurei

Akurei is the man with that smooth contemporary R&B, the kind to be placed next to the likes of Sampha and early Weeknd. His beats are low-key, but these strong vocal hooks and melodies really make him stand out amongst his peers. He may not be a huge name now in the local blogosphere, but we can assume he’ll continue to lure more people in to these infectious downtempo, soulful tunes.

IljusWifmo

This Sydney duo give us exactly what we want in our experimental techno.
There’s a dark, cold quality to their music, it feels pretty distant but that’s what makes us keep coming back to it. There’s no immediately recognisable trends to be found in their music, it’s certainly an anomaly in the triple j world of electronica, but we can’t help but appreciate that quality to them. If you’re into some of the 90s era Ninja Tune and Warp records stuff, this is for you.

GUSSY

We love some upbeat, quirky pop music with some wonky production, and that’s why we love Gussy. The producer’s twinkly keys and nimble basslines work together to make a soft yet colourful backdrop to these alt-pop bangers. It’s Gussy’s deep voice that is really the selling point of the music, it just oozes with charisma. This artist is really a character that Triple j needs more of, they’re not afraid to be themselves and invites us into their mind with these catchy as hell pop tunes.

This is just the first part of an ongoing series looking into the up-and-comers in Australia’s electronic scene.

Any artists you’d add?
