This Facebook group is teaching people how to safely take Drugs

Words by Harrison Kenney

A harm-reduction based Facebook group curated by a team of admins and moderators from around the world has been set up to raise awareness of drug abuse. The group gives practical drug advice from real drug users, and in addition to providing non-biased advice, helps both young and old people learn about what they are taking.

With the capability of being able to remain anonymous via direct message, Founder Dan Owens illustrates the page as a “judgement-free and friendly platform which allows anyone to ask a question about their substances of choice and how to safely take it.”

After seeing that “legal drugs were becoming more popular, largely thanks to the glorification of lean [the codeine / promethazine drink] by rappers and other high profile figures.” Dan decided to make the group known as Sesh Safety.

Dan Owens has been educating himself for over 13 years, “I’m 27 and have been researching forums since I was 14. I just have a pure interest and thirst for knowledge, and want to make sure people don’t make the same mistakes I did”.

There are currently, 23 admins and 19 moderators, and they are from all over the world, including the US, Australia and New Zealand, all with a zero tolerance approach to the glorification of drugs. The moderators are renowned for being tough on those that do glorify or give poor advice. Many of the admins and moderators have struggled with benzo or opiate addiction, or have had near misses, or misuse/abuse of other drugs such as MDMA and ketamine.

According to the more than 25,700 records taken between 2005 and 2017 from PillReports.net, nearly half of the MDMA pills inspected were rendered in many or few ways.

Only 40.5% of pills sold in the UK contain MDMA, and 34.7 percent sold in US. 68.8 percent pills contain MDMA in The Netherlands.

So with dangerous trends such as these increasing, it is more important than ever to spread awareness without shunning drug users.
