Discogs to block the sale of unofficial releases

In a move that will surely have some music lovers a little concerned, Discogs has revealed their plan to crack down on the sale of unofficial releases, remixes and bootlegs.

The online music store’s chief operating officer Chad Dahlstrom issued a statement to Resident Advisor touching on the reasoning behind this big move, with the nutshell of it all  being a way to “protect our buyers and sellers.”

He said: “Over the course of this year, we have continued to add resources allowing us to be more proactive in enforcing a policy that has been stated in our existing seller’s agreement while also honouring DMCA takedown notices. We respond quickly to complaints, take down requests and are working closely with labels, publishers and artists to remove these items from our marketplace when they show up.”

Unofficial releases will not be scrapped from the website entirely and will remained listed in label catalogues, however they will not be valid for purchase.

“Our mission continues to be the building of the world’s largest database and marketplace for physical music. To fulfil that mission we must protect our buyers and sellers, as well as our artists and record labels, with the same ferocity that we drive toward our mission as a company.”

Do you think this is a smart move from Discogs?
