Throwback Track: Gesaffelstein – Viol

Today we’re going to throw it back to this beast of a song, Mike Lévy aka Gesaffelstein‘s raw and thunderous tune Viol.

The brooding French Techno DJ has been known to make moody, ominous, hard-hitting tracks and nail all his live sets. Just like his music, his whole aesthetic is mysterious and dark. Cigarette in one hand, smashing drums pads and twisting filters with the other, impressive use of mood-lighting/strobes and mesmerising visuals. Gesaffelstein definitely knows how to look like a badman up on stage.

I forgot how hard Viol goes. What a monster. Viol’s a subtle, understated piece of slow-mo Techno and with a steady, thumping beat, bold bass-line and bendy lead lines it’s hard not to move and maybe throw in some head-banging in there too.

Viol may be quite a minimal track but because of its simplicity, it allows all the key elements to come forward and give them a more refined and powerful role. Gesaffelstein‘s use of diminished chords give Viol a sinister melodic feel, a reoccurring production skill that’s quite evident in most of his tracks.
