Several more Sydney venues granted lockout extension

A total of 20 venues across the Kings Cross and CBD precincts are now exempt from the 1:30am lockout law, with an additional seven having their lockout extended today.

The Kings Cross hotel, Potts Point hotel, The Burdekin, Kinselas and Cliff Dive are some of the new additions to be granted an extension on their trading hours, joining the likes of The World Bar and Oxford Art Factory.

So what does this mean exactly? Basically, these venues can now take entry up until 2am and serve drinks until 3:30am. It might not seem like much right now, but it’s a definite step in the right direction.

Speaking with the Daily Telegraph, Kings Cross Hotel’s marketing director Dan Lacaze admits he is thrilled with the changes.

“What we see this as is a really positive step in the right direction — particularly for an area that has contributed for a long time to the history of the city and it’s fallen on tough times. The area isn’t what it used to be.”

This softening of the lockout laws came into play following the Callinan review in September of last year, where it was suggested that the strict lockout laws put in place in 2014 were relaxed for specific venues.

The exciting news follows last weeks frustration when the Kings Cross Hotel was forced to remove a Keep Sydney open banner from their balcony after a local resident group issued a complained. Read more on that here.
