Beatport to launch DJ contest ‘Beats In School’

Words by Tanya Bonnie Rae

Electronic music-oriented store Beatport has announced their DJ competition Beats In School, a joint effort with Point Black Music School, AFEM, Mixcloud and Future Music.

The competition winner lands a year-long industry head start (a 12 month mentorship program) with extensive DJ and production support from Circus Recordings founder and electronic producer Yousef Zaher. Since founding Circus in 2009, Zaher has seen his legendary Circus event (based in Liverpool, UK) roll into it’s 15th year as it embarks on their first worldwide tour across fifteen cities including New York, Sydney, Berlin, Paris and Barcelona.

Every two months will see Beatport launch a new contest in conjunction with Yousef’s Circus Recordings – the first label open for entries from tech-house talent. The winner will be mentored by their chosen label and will have the opportunity to land a label showcase and official release. They will also receive ‘hardware homework’, extensive tutoring from established artists and training via Point Blank Music School.

Entrants will need to upload a track that fits the label’s sound, include it in a DJ mix, upload it to Mixcloud and promote the mix on social media. The top 20 entries will go forward to the next round, with the winner chosen by the head of the label.
