Festival Talk: 5 Ways To Stop Fence Jumpers

Shoot them, with guns.

Just kidding, that’s not very humane. However, jumping into festivals and ripping off your fellow human and all their hard work putting together a festival for your benefit is bloody rude as well.

A recent article from our mates over at Pilerats turned our eye towards a Facebook group dedicated to jumping the annual, nationwide festival Groovin The Moo. The content of this group was entirely focused on building up numbers and hype for the event, of which they all planned on getting into for free, bar a far ripped shirts, crash-tackles and perhaps an arrest.

Now, as someone who has been low in funds before and unable to attend festivals, I’ve really felt the pang of not being able to get amongst it with my mates BUT that doesn’t really excuse doing it in a way which risks injury to yourself and worse still, someone else.

As a bit of a slightly different take we’ve whipped up some fairly harmless ideas to help promoters tackle fence jumpers (not literally);

paint-cans

Paint on top of fences

To jump into a festival, you generally need a fence to get you there. But what if the top of the fence was covered in a paint that’ll stain a pair of hands or a crotch in no time? Not only will it be easier for organisers to spot any jumpers, but also put off any potential vaulters not wanting to wreck their favourite festy gear. Better still, paint is cheap!

stinky-nose-hold

Stink juice on top of fences

Farts are the worst right? Unless you dealt it. But being covered in that kinda eggy scent is probably going to put a damper on your day and any potential hook up opportunities that might arise when you’re fist pumping to RUFUS.

paint-roller

Paint brushes

Sounds silly but having a couple of speedy security runners with paint brushes would have a similar deterrence as paint on fences. Once you’re hit with a vibrant splash you’re going to struggle to blend in that easily and you don’t really want to cop that on your favourite tee.

paintball-guns

Paintball Guns

While extreme and probably some hefty liability on-hand for promoters here it sure would be a deterrence copping a couple of paintballs to the body. Ever been shot with one? Not a whole heap of fun.

festival-tickets

Spare tickets

Fence jumpers are opportunistic types so having a spare 5-10 tickets on hand to give out and break up a pack of hoppy types might just the way to defuse the situation. Would a ring leader turn down a free or discounted ticket??

All in all it’s a bigger issue than just figuring out ways to deter but educate people on the right way to do things. Many festivals these days offer payment plans and pre-order holds with plenty of time to pay off tickets so there really isn’t any excuse.

What do you think would stop fence jumpers?
