Enschway Talks SoundCloud, Lil Yachty And His Upcoming Project

Enschway is easily one of the most exciting names in Australian dance music right now.

After a string of hard-hitting EP’s and singles, the Sydney based producer has kicked off his first national headline tour, selling out Oxford Art Factory last week to a stacked local crowd, with a full weekend of shows set for the next few days

One of the support acts for his Sydney show, Badrapper, is also a regular contributor at Stoney Roads and a good friend of Enschway’s, so we tee’d up a friendly interview to pick his brain about new music, the SoundCloud world and his recent addition to Splendour in The Grass.

This is what went down…

Badrapper: Hey m8, thanks for Saturday night. That was pretty loose.

Enschway: Thank you for coming, and yeah that was crazy, can’t believe how wild it was…

B: You’ve got more tour shows coming up this weekend, but lets talk about how you got to this point. You’re local dude from the shire who’s gone on to become a household name in the bass music scene. What first got you interested in electronic music?

E: When I was younger I would watch a lot of Halo and Cod montages which had predominantly old EDM and dub step songs. I found UKF, Monstercat & all those old channels and I just fell in love with it.

B: How did you start producing? Who or what inspired you to get into music?

E: I was DJing at small house  parties for a little extra cash when I was 15. I wanted to make the sets more interesting so I started making mashups then tried to make some music & loved it. Starting off just having fun with it and it inspired me. But as I produced more I came across artists like San Holo, Just a Gent & Singularity, which really inspired me to try and take it to the next level.

B: As someone who also releases music on SoundCloud, when did you start noticing that your music was popping off online? How long was the process to get to that point? Can you pin point the moment the momentum started to build rapidly?

E: I only really started noticing when I was getting approached by collectives asking to release. It took a long time of learning how to produce to get to the point where I was happy with what I was making. The pin point moment was when Daruma approached me. They really helped build a bigger fan base and make it somewhat more legit.

B: There seems to be a tight relationship between you and Perth producer Luude. How did you guys become friends? When did you first meet?

E: We met through The South East Grind. Just had similar taste in music and banter so we became mates through the internet. I guess it’s how all modern love stories go these days.

B: Can you talk about your involvement with label Sola? Whats the vision for the label?

E: It’s a label myself, MYRNE & Awoltalk created. The vision is to give less known producers some spotlight to help them put their music in front of a good audience. We sit down and spend a lot of time scrolling through SoundCloud trying to find these dudes and we have found some absolutely insane producers; Sadkey & Dimebag being my two favourites.

B: As your first headline tour In general, how have you found it thus far? Has it been intense?

E: It’s been very fun and crazy. Some of the weekends are super intense with the traveling but I guess thats just the job and deep down inside I actually love the hectic nature of a tight tour schedule

B: What are some pointers for keeping the energy levels up when you’re touring a lot?

E: Have fun & sleep on the plane

B: You’ve just been added to the Splendour lineup. How does that feel?

E: It feels really good. I played in the small Smirnoff tent last year and now been moved up to a way bigger stage which feels really good. It’s been a big goal of mine.

B: Who are you looking forward to the most on the SITG lineup?

E: Lil Boat

B: What do you think of Australia’s dance music climate? Who are some artists you reckon we should keep an eye out on for the future?

E: It’s really really exciting at the moment, theres about to be a bunch of young dudes come up in the next year, watch out for Perto, Leotrix & Wildlife, these dudes are all 17 and under and stupidly good producers.

B: Do you have any advice for young artists who are trying to stand out?

E: Have fun with what you make. Just make what you want to make and don’t try fit into a mould or cast; Create your own

B: Any exciting projects in the works that fans might be able to see in the near future?

E: I’m working pretty hard on Friendschway Vol. 3 & a bunch of singles as well. Hopefully they are all out soon

B: Now for the big one, where do you see yourself in 5 years?

E: Hanging out with Lil Yachty and making beats together.

Enschway will be bringing his ‘I’ll Wait‘ tour to The MET in Brisbane tomorrow night, followed by his Adelaide show on Saturday at Fat Controller. For more info on his tour, head to the event right here, and check the tour flyer below.
