21 People Overdose On GHB At Electric Parade Music Festival

A tragic turn of events at the Electric Parade Music Festival has seen the overdosing and hospitalisation of 21-attendees on Saturday night.

The event that took place at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl also resulted in 40 arrests, including 33 men and seven women, as well as 28 partygoers receiving diversions and two given cannabis cautions.

The cause of the overdoses, however, was the synthetic drug GHB – formally known as Gamma hudroxybutyrate – which is usually taken as a colourless, odourless liquid. This drug lowers bodily temperature and heart rate, and can cause memory lapses, drowsiness, dizziness and headaches. When mixed with alcohol and other substances, it can be deadly.

This devastating end to what was meant to a celebration begs the question of why pill testing has not been authorised at music festivals/events as of yet, however it turns out it is still a big no from the authorities.

The Mental Health Minister Martin Foley explained the State Government has no plan of introducing pill testing, however he admits that current preventative actions and harm reduction is not working.

“What we need to do is ramp up our harm reduction efforts, the $192 million that we spend on all sorts of programs around peer support work.

“Getting the right messages about safe behaviour are clearly not working and we will consider how we have to do more.”

It is reported that this was the highest number of hospitalisations at a music festival in recent times.
