In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days, earlier this week there was some pretty big criticism of Nina Kraviz’ smalltown set, with punters claiming that, long story short, it wasn’t what they had paid for. Nina responded in a lengthy Facebook post pretty much justifying every track selection that she had made for that particular set – going above and beyond what anyone sane feels like she should have to do.
Today we’ve got a little piece of history to demonstrate our love for Nina, her craft and her selections throughout her career. After trawling through the archives, here’s an hour mix by a younger Nina on RTS.FM on Halloween of 2009. There’s even a green screen behind her to show exactly what she’s doing as she mixes, because she’s got nothin’ to hide. If that wasn’t enough, she does the entire thing on vinyl too, so those vinyl snobs among us can rest easy.
As we’ve come to expect from the Russian icon, the mix is a fluid movement through all sorts of techno, regular and minimal house. The real question is, is this the Nina that complaining smalltown punters wanted to see? Or is it maybe a little unrealistic to think that she hadn’t grown as an artist and a selector in the seven years since this was recorded? That’s for you to decide.
