It looks as though The Hopetoun Hotel in Surry Hills is being granted a second life, with talks of the famous pub reopening in the near future as a live music venue.
As reported by The Brag, the hotel was purchased by Adrian Bull of Blind Records who confirmed the purchase on Facebook. Bull plans on turning the the empty, run-down venue into the live music hot-spot it once was, having previously hosted the likes of Paul Kelly and Sarah Blasko in it’s day. Good on you, Adrian.
The Hopetoun was originally constructed between 1836 and 1839, however it was closed in 2009 during a time of protest. This came as a big shock to local punters who frequented the joint, as well as musicians and live music lovers alike. In 2012, the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage recommended the Hopetoun should be retained and conserved, maintaining the exterior of the building. However the pub’s interior is definitely going to need a facelift after spending the better half of a decade in the lurch .
Regardless, this is great news for Sydney and works as a nice little screw you to Mike Baird an his cronies
Here is hoping Adrian Bull and The Hopetoun bring back some life into Sydney’s suffering night time economy. We all know it is much needed.
The Hopetoun is located at 416 Bourke St, Surry Hills.
