The release of Deadmau5’s sixth studio album ‘W:/2016ALBUM/’ is well and truly on the horizon. It’s his first album as his own independent artist, and his first on his own label mau5trap, and today he’s launched the pre-order for the release with a brand track, ‘Let Go’, featuring vocals by Grabbitz.
Like ‘4ware’, a track he premiered on BBC Radio 1 last week as Pete Tong’s essential new tune, ‘Let Go’ is a slow burning and atmospheric banger. Beginning with some breathy and emotional lyrics by Grabbitz, it’s cut by a signature acid style synth that moves the track into a faster paced and flowing piece of music. There are a bunch of similar motifs and sounds running through that never make it anything particularly experimental or wild, but it’s a Deadmau5 sound that has come to be very well regarded and appreciated among his fans.
While it’s been getting some big praises from the press and his fanbase though, Deadmau5 himself, real name Joel Zimmerman, has publicly denounced the new record. Last month he made his feeling very public via Twitter, and today has returned to social media with similar sentiments.
i don’t even like it. it was like… so fucking rushed / slapped together. but i mean… hey, if you like it i wanna like it too, just dont.

maybe it’s time… to just sit down, and work on this fabled “album i like” thing ive been wanting to do for the past 10 years.

While the putting out of an album you don’t like definitely questions the integrity of an artist, especially if they’re only doing it for the dollars, the silver lining here is the fact that Zimmerman has obviously recognised that he doesn’t like much of his own music. This fabled “album I like”, although taking 10 years, should be an interesting one. As for ‘W:/2016ALBUM/’? It releases December 2nd.
