We Chat with Christopher Port ahead of Paradise Music Festival

Multitalented Melbourne producer Christopher Port has made a return releasing two tracks – ‘My Love’ and  ‘Sum 1′ (‘His Eye Is On The Sparrow’ Edit).

The dual release has come after an amazingly successful 2016 for Port – releasing debut EP VETEMENT in July and touring with the likes of Big Scary, Airling, Jack Grace and Ngaiire.

‘My love’ is a nod to early 90s rave music, and the Whitney edit was created through experimentation; “made a beat and a few chords one day, dragged this acapella into the track and pressed play expecting for it to sound weird but I liked it and decided to leave it there…It felt like something that was meant to be, so what you hear is how the track was the day I made it.

Ahead of his show at Paradise Music festival, we got the pleasure of having a chat to him about the tracks, what influences him and what’s to come in the future.

How does the creative process for ‘My Love’ compare to Vetement?

Pretty similar. Although the tracks on Vetement were all made around the same time, whereas i wrote ‘My Love’ after i made bunch of tracks all with a common vibe. My Love was the track that expressed what i wanted in the clearest way.

What have you been listening to lately?

Lots of 90’s rave stuff, DJ Hype mixes, Mall Grab, Ross From Friends, Overmono. Also the new Friendships record is next level.

Any artists you’d like to collaborate with in the near future?

CP: Working with Friendships would be a dream. Kučka too. I’ve been working on some tracks with Jack Grace, every time we work on stuff it just clicks, so that’s always a dream collab.

What non-musical influences do you have?

Fashion designers are a big inspiration for my creative process. Particularly Raf Simmons (Jill Sander, Dior) Demna Gvasalia (Vetements, Balenciaga) and John Galliano (Dior, Margiela). I find the way they think about art and engage their creativity really inspiring. The way they stage their shows is always so in line with the clothes and heightens the experience in a way that very few musicians a capable of doing.

What other artists should we keep an eye out for at Paradise?

I’m always excited to see Corin play, she’s incredible! The Couture set is going to be a wild ride too, can’t wait for that.
