PREMIERE: um.. – ‘why tho’

Ok if you know anything about me you’ll know I fucking love um.. They’re up there in my top 5 producers. I’m a sucker for originality in branding and weird sound design, and you can bet that as soon as they release their merch I’ll be all over it like a hobo on a ham sandwich. But being unbiased as possible, ‘why tho’ is a 10/10 tune. It sounds like a Playstation and a rabid dog got it on. And I mean that in the best of ways.

Ahead of the premiere of ‘why tho’, which is released via spirited’s ‘Free Spirits 3’, we checked in with um.. to ask a few very important questions, check it out:

STONEY ROADS: What’s up um..? First and foremost, why tho?

Um..: Hey Stoney. That’s a question we’ve asked ourselves as well. We’ll let you know when we get an answer.

SR: What’s the best Crash Bandicoot game? (Pls say Warped and Crash Bash)

U: Definitely Warped. Crash Team Racing is pretty tight too. Good job catching those samples.

SR: What inspired ‘why tho’?

U: We don’t need a lot of inspiration for our tracks. We just look for interesting sounds and start playing around with them.

SR: You guys joined forces at Icon. How did you come up with the essence of ‘um..’?

U: We drew a lot of inspiration from Icon’s Art of Flow class. Icon is where we met and is where we still work on most of our music so, Icon is a heavy influencer of um.. I think the essence is a combination of adaptive arrangement, obscure processing & not taking ourselves too seriously. um.. is a part of our personalities that likes internet humor and trolling and dislikes where the scene we’re a part of has gone.

SR: Do you still think your music fits under the description of ‘shitty spaghetti’?

U: Yeah.

SR: There was a hole in electronic music, a big void, if you will. Now that you’ve filled it, have you noticed any other people getting influence from your distinctive style?

U: I don’t think we’re satisfied with the extent to which that void has been filled, yet… there’s still shitty food based, gimmick brands popping up all the time… I (Dylan) haven’t noticed any other producers that sound like um.. besides when they’re using our EP stems as a sample pack, (that’s cool btw we don’t care) but some dope producers to check out would be : X&G, Josh Pan, ESQ & Woolymammoth to name a few.

SR: What does an average day in the life of ‘um..’ look like?

U: In the morning I(Ben) like to meditate and then paint or draw. Dylan reads a book. Then we get ready and go to studio time at Icon and run whatever errands we have that day. TV shows and video games at night.

SR: What are you listening to right now?

U: The coffee table jazz playlist on Spotify.

SR: What are you dressing up as for Halloween?

U: Dogs.

SR: Any plans for an international tour? *Cough* come to Australia *cough*

U: No plans yet, but we enjoy traveling a lot. Would love to come out there and explore.

SR: What does the end of the year look like for your guys?

U: Some cool shows coming up, a bunch of new music getting finished and up next our ‘do it for the kids’ remix ep is coming out with some of our favorite people / producers on the remixes. definitely excited to put that out sometime soon.
