Apple Music And Tidal Exclusives Are Bad For Artists, Says Spotify

Spotify’s Chief Content Officer, Stefan Blom, has gone on record at the Wall Street Journal’s WSJ.D Live conference saying exclusives from Apple Music and Tidal are “not good for artists”.

He spoke alongside Global Head of Creator Services, Troy Carter who also said that “artists are starting to move away from exclusives” and reiterated that Spotify have never done them.

The Spotify spokespersons also took aim at the paid only subscription model while defending Spotify’s ad-supported business model. Carter argued that it’s unrealistic to expect paid-only subscription services to work when some people can’t afford the simplest of luxuries or necessities.

“[With our model] They may never convert to a paying subscriber… They may not be able to afford it.”

Spotify hired Carter in June to work with artists and labels. Carter has worked with heaps of big artists, most noticeably Lady Gaga, but also the likes of Will Smith, John Legend and Meghan Trainor.
