Popular Melbourne venue The Mercat will unfortunately be closing it’s doors this coming February.
In a recent Facebook post, a spokesperson from the venue announced the devastating news that the infamous dungeon club will be closing on February 11 due to the Queen Victoria Market redevelopment.
The post from The Mercat was short and bittersweet, reading as follows:
Unfortunately the time has come for us to deliver the bad news. Due to the QVM redevelopment, we will be closing down. We’ll save the soppy shit for February, but in the mean time, please join us over the next few months for some last dances.
This isn’t the first cultural sacrifice to come from the QVM redevelopment, with Cry Baby Records (just around the corner) recently announcing their closure for the same reasons. See below:
The Mercat is one of Melbourne’s most beloved party locations, and has become a dance music hub over the years. If you’re in Melbourne, or visiting soon, be sure to head along and have one last dance before they close in February, 2017.
The Queen Victoria Market renewal masterplan was approved by council on July 28th, 2015. You can read up on it here.
