London Nightclub Fabric Will Remain Closed Indefinitely After License Review

In what has been heartbreaking news, the London staple nightclub has been ordered to remain closed after having its license revoked by Islington Council.

Members of the local council sat down Tuesday evening (London time) to discuss the future of Fabric’s license, with representatives from fabric, Islington Public Health Authority, Islington License Authority, and the Met Police.

Unfortunately, the 6 hour hearing came to its conclusion at about 1am Wednesday morning when committee chair Flora Williamson read the ruling against the nightclub, stating “a culture of drugs exists at the club which management cannot control.”

The decision comes after a 12 hour Rinse FM takeover on Saturday, featuring many big-name artists pledging their support with their music, including Ricardo Villalobos, Ben Klock, Nina Kraviz, Ben UFO, Alan Fitzpatrick, and Marcel Dettmann. As well as this, the petition to save fabric has garnered over 140,000 signatures, with statements given by London mayor Sadiq Khan and Islington South council member Emily Thornberry in support of the club.

So what does this mean for fabric? Having their license revoked by the council means they’re shut permanently. Hopefully, as he was elected on the back of a promise to appoint a Night Tzar, Sadiq Khan can have an influence on this decision. Until then, one of the world’s greatest clubs, and England’s best, will remain closed indefinitely.

Some very small good news to take out of this, Alan Miller, the Chair of the Nightlife Industries Association, has said that the NTIA will start the Fund For Fabric to fight the decision in hopes of changing the fate of the club.
