Interview: Chatting to Re.You About All Things Australia, European Festivals, and New Music

An artist who has been on the move of late is Germany’s Re.You. (If you’ve witnessed his live sets with Rampa you will know what we are talking about)

But it’s not just in the live arena where he excels, the producer has also had a killer solo run with productions which has seen him release on labels like Souvenir, Saved, Kompakt and also Avotre, the label run by his brother, Sante. Now as part of the Mobilee Records family, the producer has really hit his stride. Just after the first production on his newly minted Younion Recordings label has been released, the German will finally head down to Australia for his debut tour. We got some time for a quick chat ahead of his arrival – and check out the tour dates below to catch him in the flesh….

This is your debut Australian tour coming up. What are you looking forward to the most about coming Down Under? What do you know about the scene in Australia?

Actually I’m looking forward to catch a glimpse of the Australian lifestyle and country. I don’t know so much about the scene but I heard a lot of good stories. My brother Philipp (Santé) was recently touring Australia, and he told me some. I’m excited.

Your new label Younion just went live with it’s first release featuring tracks from you, Terranova and Eins Tiefer. You are a very busy man, so how hard was it for you to start a new label with everything else you do? What else can you tell us about what you have planned for the label?

It comes from the heart. I want to release what I like. No compromises. For the next one I signed tracks by Tiefschwarz, Ruede Hagelstein and Florian Busse. And of course another one by me will be on it as well.

You started off your electronic music career listening to the hip-hop sounds of DJ Premier, and the turntablism culture that comes with that. Do you still have a an interest in that scene? Which act still inspires you to this day and why?

I still love Hip-Hop but today’s scene has nothing to do with what happened back then. So I’m not really into it right now but I like the OVO family from Canada around Drake. Their beats/productions are so fresh and deep.

It’s currently getting to the end of a very busy festival season in Europe. Any hot tips you can give us into which festival we should attend next year?

There are so many small festivals growing. You should check “Feel Festival” in Germany. I didn’t play there but I heard some pretty good stories of close friends.

And finally, what is the one track that we definitely will hear you play on your upcoming visit?

My latest one for Younion which is called “Break it Down”

Tour Dates:

Friday 30th September: Geisha Bar, Perth

Saturday 1st October: Nights Like This @ Goodbar, Sydney

Sunday 2nd October: Pawn and Co, Melbourne
