Could Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja Actually Be Banksy?

Massive Attack member Robert Del Naja has had the finger pointed at him by journalist Craig Williams, who is adamant that he is the real Banksy.

Del Naja has since denied this, but the crazy part is that Williams of makes a lot sense of sense with his argument.

Despite photos of the suspected Banksy circulating the web and previous articles that attempt to confirm the identity of the renowned graffiti artist, Williams believes he has got Banksy truly figured out. Here is a run-down of his argument.

It is known that Robert Del Naja was a graffiti artist in the 80s, and it is also known that he is supposedly close friends with Banksy, but Williams has put the foil hat on and dug even further, revealing some rather curious points.

The kicker that ties this theory together is that Banksy murals have been turning up in locations at the same time Massive Attack have toured.

Two big early examples of this are when Massive Attack performed in Melbourne in March, 2003. Come April, there was a Banksy mural in the same city. And when Banksy curated a full exhibition in Los Angeles in 2006, it was the same time Massive Attack were performing in that city.

Another example is the 14 stencils that popped up in New Orleans in 2008, at the same time Del Naja was co-writing the soundtrack for a New Orleans based documentary, Trouble The Water.

However, the most inquisitive piece of potential evidence for Williams’ case is in 2010, when Banksy pieces turned up in San Francisco, New Orleans and Toronto, just days after Massive Attack performed in those exact cities.

Another far-to-close for comfort additive to Williams’ case is that Banksy actually wrote the forward for Del Naja’s ‘3D and the Art of Massive Attack’, a book that was published last year.

Despite all of this, Robert Del Naja has denied it all. But that’s a very Banksy thing to do isn’t it? They certainly wouldn’t just cave in and admit it.

Foil-hats aside, its an entertaining theory. Whether Del Naja is or isn’t Banksy, as long as Massive Attack keep making good music and Banksy makes good art, we’re happy.
