Berghain Pays Less Taxes Because It Is ‘High Culture’

Considering how badly the NSW government treats our nightlife, it’s comforting and also somewhat frustrating to know that under German law, Berghain pays less taxes as it is a place of cultural relevance.

Isn’t that amazing?

After a prolonged legal battle between the club and the German tax authorities came to its recent ending, it was decided that Berghain is deserving of paying the lower “high culture” tax for it’s significant cultural relevance.

The popular Berlin venue was under threat of paying a 19% entertainment tax but this was flipped and the result remaining a significantly lower 7% tax, with all Berghain hosted events being recognised as “high culture”.

As reported by Electronic Beats, “tax officials claimed that a place where people dance, have fun and take drugs is ruled by entertainment, not by culture. The club’s management claimed that the same logic could be applied to classical music.”

Touché.

Better reason to experience Berghain than ever, right?  Why not practise getting in while you wait.
