Sydney’s Mayor Takes A Swing At Lockout Laws

Words By Sarah Tonkin

Sydney’s Mayor Clover Moore took another swing at her city’s imposing and degrading lockout laws, which ban entry to a new venue after 1:30am and cut off all alcohol service after 3am in Central Sydney venues.

Moore has been all over the lockout laws, defending the city’s youth culture and squashing the entire operation but unfortunately Sydney’s lockout laws fall into the hands of NSW’s Premier Mike Baird‘s who isn’t particularly up for changing it around or dropping it altogether.

Moore penned another opinion renewing calls for a safer and more balanced nightlife while also calling for 24-hour public transport so individuals have a way of getting home safely.

“It’s a fantastic initiative,” she wrote in an opinion piece for The Guardian Australia. “If you want people to go out at night, they need safe and easy options to get home.”

Moore wants to trial public transport services to at least 4am on Fridays and Saturdays and a call to end the 1:30am lockout on well-managed venues and reconsideration of the 3am cut-off alcohol service.

The NSW Government’s Liquor Law Review is due any day now, so hopefully the people of Sydney will have a better direction of where Sydney’s nightlife will be moving to.
