This Is The Worst Year For Album Sales In 25 Years

Album sales are the lowest they have been since 1991.

With streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music booming, it seems that people no longer care to purchase albums, with CD sales dropping 16.9% this year. However, with CD sales plummeting, vinyl sales are still on the rise, reaching 11.4% more more sales in the same amount of time.

Vinyl and streaming in, CD’s out.

Despite seeming as though streaming is hurting physical album sales, Billboard claim it isn’t, writing: “Listeners streamed 208.9 billion songs (which translates to 139.2 million album units) between January and now, an increase of 58.7 percent.”

“Of that 208.9 billion, 113.6 billion were audio-only, versus 95.3 billion video streams (defined as a music video view on YouTube, Vevo, Tidal and Apple Music – of which the latter two contribute a very small piece). It’s the first time audio has surpassed lower-paying video streams.”

So technically, album sales are on the rise, however it seems physical Cd’s purchases are all but out the door.

Do you still buy albums in the form of CD?
