Drones To Provide Extra Mobile Coverage At Festivals

The days of zero phone coverage at festivals may soon be a thing of past, with the potential introduction of network boosting Drones.

The inevitable peril of being stuck, smack-bang in the centre of a mosh, looking aimlessly around for your friends while your phone stares back at your with zero network is one of those things we all must accept when we give ourselves over to a festival.

In a way it can keep mobiles in our pockets which keeps the experience more organic, but when it comes to finding your mates, it just STINKS. However, the forward thinkers at AT&T have proposed the answer, and it flies!

AT&T declared in a recent blog post that this new technology – aptly called flying COWs (cell on wings) –  will be used for “large scale events” and for “rapid disaster response”.

“Imagine you’re at a concert watching your favourite band, and out of the corner of your eye you notice a tethered drone hovering nearby,” says AT&T.

“But this drone isn’t taking photos or videos of the band.  It’s temporarily providing enhanced LTE wireless coverage at the packed venue so you, along with thousands of others in attendance, can simultaneously send photos and videos to share the moment.”

Sounds like a bloody ripper of an idea right? Well don;t get too excited just yet, as AT&T are currently trialling the idea. However it seems like this will be getting the go ahead a lot sooner than expected and we’re all for it.

Here is hoping it makes it’s way down under.
