Brisbane DJ Paul Dluxx talks all things QLD nightlife and how he tackles a remix!

Paul Dluxx is no stranger behind the decks. The Brisbane based DJ/producer has been working the circuit for a while now, dropping heaters all over the joint and cementing himself at the forefront of Brisbane’s dance music realm.

We caught up with Paul to pick his brain, talking all things nightlife and music.

SR: How long have you been DJing the Brisbane circuit for? What got you into it?

Paul Dluxx: I’ve lost count but I think it’s somewhere around 12-13 years. My love for hip hop got me interested in turntablism, which then led to becoming a club DJ.

SR: Coming from Sydney, we have seen a lot of changes in our nightlife due to lockout laws. With QLD lockout laws being out in place, how do you think this affect the nightlife?

PD: I wouldn’t be surprised if it hits us as hard as it did Sydney, but I’m staying optimistic. The scene is very healthy and all of the clubs within the Valley precinct are very close to one another so we have that in our favour.

SR: You’ve been know to remix some OG classics, such as ‘Move Bitch’ by Luda. What was it about that song that interested you in remixing it?

PD: Move Bitch is just one of those anthems that everyone knows, so it felt right to put my own spin on it and bring it to the club.

SR: On the topic of remixes, you have done a fair few. What is your production process when remixing?

Just like everything, about 30 different versions until I finally stop yelling at the computer, followed by wishing I made it into an original.

SR: How has your own music writing been going of late? Can we expect some new music in the near future?

PD: I have a new single coming out on Ministry of Sound label Downright on May 23, as well as some collabs with fellow Brisbane artists LowParse and Varcity.

I’ve also got a side project that I keep under wraps which lets me jam with some more chilled happy vibes.

SR: In your career, what has bene the best gig to date? And why?

PD: Mainstage at Future Music Festival 2015 was a huge achievement for me, but the funnest gigs have come from my residency at The Met. I also recently played Rattle Snake Motel on the Gold Coast and that was super vibey!

SR: Can you share with us any Australian artists you have been loving lately?

PD: Straight up love to my boy Paces. It’s been crazy inspiring to watch him develop his music and brand into the huge success we see today. Also frothing on stuff from LO’99, Torren Foot, Motez, Terace, there’s just too many to mention!

SR: Finally, what are some pointers you’d give to any kids trying to get involved in the Australian music industry?

PD: It takes time, persistence, and hard work. Step out of your comfort zone (quit your job/don’t sleep) and struggle for a bit while you work on your craft. Network, find out what you can offer the industry, and most of all – DON’T BE A DICK!

Yo can catch Paul Dluxx slanging some tunes at The Met in his hometown of Brisbane this weekend! Get around it.
