We Talk Coffee, ‘The Vibe’ EP And Shannon Noll With Motez

With the release of his latest EP, ‘The Vibe’ absolutely killing it right now and his upcoming tour in celebration of the release we sat down with one of the nicest blokes in dance music, Motez, to talk Coffee, The new EP and Shannon Noll.

Righto we’ll jump straight into the hard questions first. Checking out your socials you seem to be a bit of a coffee enthusiast. Motez walks into a café what’s your go to coffee order?

Alright so normally id just go a latte but if I want to actually taste the coffee id go a double espresso.

The Vibe tours about to kick off you’ve got a string of dates across Australia and New Zealand the big question everyones been dying to know. What Australian city has the best coffee?

Ahhhh… Adelaide. Adelaide absolutely, but you know what actually Auckland has good coffee. My mum reckons it’s the milk. I was on like a holiday with my family and she was just raving about the coffee and she made a good point it’s probably the milk, even though the coffee’s about the coffee, but you cant go past a good milk.

There must be something in those adelaide coffee beans lately there just seems to be so much good music coming out of the city from the likes of the Untzz 12-inch boys, the Warren Raww boys and yourself.

I hope so. Yeah, Actually one of the guys from Senor Roar, Mike, is a coffee expert he actually won the barista championship of South Australia and he represented South Australia in the national champs.

The Vibe’ EP itself is out very soon and already the first single, ‘Down Like This’, is doing huge things internationally. It must feel good getting your music dropped in sets by the likes of Gorgon City and Martin Solvieg in his latest Diplo and Friends Mix.

It’s really good, actually the Diplo and Friends mix both guests played it in there sets. Its great, so its weird that that happened. It feels really good. You know what, it’s not that we didn’t have faith in the song as such we thought the main focus would be on the lead single, ‘The Vibe’ which is what the EP is named after and is a track with Scruffizer but no it seems like people are loving ‘Down Like This’ and now we’re pushing the EP back to give it a bit of time to breathe.

How’d you find the making of the new EP it seems you’ve got a whole bunch of collaborators on board this time?

It’s a little bit different this time, I didn’t actually make this EP thinking I was going to make this EP with these tracks. I’ve been working on tracks for the last year and a half and both my manager and I sat down and said we wanted to compile a bunch of tracks that represent where I am right now, what i’m thinking and you know I grew up as an artist in the last two years.

I wanted something that’s a little different to your normal kind of music because unfortunately a lot of bass music and house music has been formulated so that it all sounds the same. Its become a bit generic and the other thing that annoys me is house music should be happy and doesn’t take itself to seriously and everything that’s coming out right now is not only formulated its dark and its serious and i’m not all about that. The main reason for, ‘The Vibe’ EP is it doesn’t take itself to seriously.

So ‘Down Like This’ has been absolutely killing it lately, how did you and Tkay hook-up?

Well I worked with her previously on her first mixtape, I produced her track trouble and we had fun it was really good, obviously she’s a very talented lady.

She gave me a couple of verses and said I don’t know what to do with them so I was like id love to have them and I used them in a few different beds and this one seemed to work.

So I contacted her again and said lets hook up and finish this track and we did and recorded it in Adelaide and the rest was history. It was really quick. It was really easy.

We’ve seen you upload a few sneaky Instagrams of you jamming on the keyboard and Roland-TR8. Can we expect any live elements to the upcoming shows or will it be strictly DJ sets?

Well alright.. I grew up playing keys. I started making music way before I started DJ-ing and I feel like now is a good time to go back to that a bit more. Adding a few more elements onto whatever i’m doing now with the DJ set making it a bit more interesting for me and unique for the audience that is there.

I enjoy myself DJ-ing to but I get into a lot more because I don’t play the entirety of the track I always chop and change , but I thought this time maybe I’ll add some more keyboards or pads or piano. Hopefully that will be the start of something and maybe eventually a full live show.

So we’ve seen you release a host of remixes and re-edits in the past in particular from two Aussie legends in Iggy Azalea and Maddison Avenue. Surely the Shannon Noll re-edit is on the cards?

Haha… ummm, I don’t think so. I don’t know much about the guy but who knows. I mean the Iggy song had all the elements of bass house I’m not sure about Shannon Noll but.

What does an ideal rest of 2016 look like for Motez?

Making music that I really enjoy that is not strictly dance music and for everyone to take it as it is and have no expectations on It. Free, Easy, Fun. I think this year is mostly about music a bit about touring but mostly about music.

Last question, Is it time to finally punt Arsene Wenger from Arsenal or can Arsene and the lads get back and win EPL glory?

Pulling out the big guns here aren’t you. It’s a really sad thing the situation with Arsene Wenger. If you love Arsenal you love Arsene Wenger but its got to a point where I’m not sure if he can turn it around. Its either him or his players but I guess they’re the same thing so its either the chicken or the egg. Maybe give him one more year… Maybe.

Have a listen to his latest track below and be sure to jump on tickets to ‘The Vibe’ Tour here.
