We reported last month that Soulwax had released the soundtrack tracklisting for Belgica, a film by Felix Van Groeningen following two brothers starting a bar and getting swept up in the midst of Belgium’s nightlife scene. It’s the first studio album they’ve produced in over ten years, and after tease us all with all the remixes they’ve been doing recently, it’s been well worth the wait.
Each track is by a fictional band to stay within the film’s narrative, and it’s amazing to hear just how Soulwax have created 16 distinctly different sounds, while also imparting their own signature onto each of them. From acoustic guitar to punk to electro-pop, with some really impressive and varied vocal work, it’s all over the place and so calculated at the same time. There’s something for every fan of theirs, and in itself an amazing storytelling device even if you aren’t able to catch the film. Check the trailer below, and let us know which of these fictional bands is your favourite.
